1.2.2 Your child- and adolescent selves

YOUR CHILD SELF

Sit comfortably, close your eyes. Think back to your early years and see yourself as a little child. Either a cheerful or sad picture has appeared in front of you, imagine approaching your child-self and look into your eyes. What do you see in them? Are you happy? Are you afraid? Sad? Proud? Ask your child self what they need. Embrace them, tell them you love them very much. Kiss them and promise them that you will take good care of them from now on. Give them what they asked for!

YOUR ADOLESCENT SELF

Sit comfortably, close your eyes. Think back to your teenage years and see yourself as an adolescent. Recall a memory when you didn’t feel good enough, when nobody understood you, or when you felt absolutely lonely, or you were hurt in any way. Then, in your imagination, go to your teenage self, hug her and tell her how proud you are of her! Tell him about the things you are proud of right now and emphasize that you can owe it all to her. Promise her that you will pay much more attention to her from today and make her dreams come true.

Exercise:

You will need 3 chairs:

Place the three chairs in a triangular shape. One is for your present self, the other is for your adolescent self, and the third is for your child self. Sit in the chair of your child self first. Silence your thoughts and pay attention only to your bodily sensations. What do you feel? Breath deeply and watch any tension dispersing away. Spend 1-2 minutes here.

Take another deep breath, stand up, and sit in the chair of your adolescent self. Silence your thoughts and pay attention only to your bodily sensations again. What do you feel? What would you need? Take a deep breath and let yourself feel more and more relaxed. Spend 1-2 minutes here.

Now take a deep breath once again, stand up and sit in the chair of your present self. In your mind, look into the eyes of your child self, and say to her softly, “Yes.”, “Yes.”, “Yes.” Then repeat this process with your teenage self.
