1.4.2 Levels of consciousness – an introduction
When you walk into a room, do you notice how the atmosphere changes depending on who’s there? Some people seem to radiate calm, hope, and inspiration—while others spread tension, criticism, or fear without saying a word.
This isn’t just “vibes” or intuition—according to Dr. David R. Hawkins, it’s a measurable phenomenon. In his book Power vs. Force (1995), Hawkins introduced the Map of Consciousness: a scale of human consciousness levels, from the most contracted states like shame and guilt, to the most expansive like peace and enlightenment.
Hawkins’ Map of Consciousness
Hawkins measured consciousness levels on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 1,000:
-
Below 200 – Energy is destructive to the self or others. States like shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger, and pride fall here. These levels weaken and drain.
-
Above 200 – Energy supports life and fosters growth. Starting at courage (200), the levels move upward through neutrality, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, joy, peace, and finally enlightenment.
-
Each level is exponentially more powerful than the one below. Moving even a small step upward has an outsized effect on both your own life and the collective energy field of humanity.
Power vs. Force
Hawkins makes an important distinction:
-
Force pushes against something, seeks to control, and often drains both the user and the target. It’s rooted in fear or desire.
-
Power arises naturally from truth, love, and integrity. It doesn’t need to overpower—it simply is. Power sustains and uplifts.
The Collective Impact of One Person
Hawkins’ research suggested that one individual at a higher consciousness level counterbalances thousands—or even millions—of people operating below the level of 200 (the threshold of integrity and life-supporting energy).
| One person at level | Balances… |
|---|---|
| 700 (Enlightenment) | 70 million others below level 200 |
| 600 (Peace) | 10 million others below level 200 |
| 500 (Love) | 750,000 others below level 200 |
| 400 (Reason) | 400,000 others below level 200 |
| 300 (Willingness) | 90,000 others below level 200 |
Why Is It Important for You?
If you commit to raising your own level of consciousness—even by a single level—you’re not only improving your own life, you’re uplifting everyone you interact with.
Your presence alone becomes a form of coaching.
When you’re anchored in love, reason, or peace, your very existence supports those who are struggling.
This means:
-
You don’t have to “fix” others—just embodying truth, compassion, and integrity shifts the field.
-
Your growth as a coach is a gift to your clients and the wider world.
Read a detailed description of each Level of Consciousness in Hawkins’s book and reflect:
-
Where do you think you spend most of your time on Hawkins’ scale?
-
What small daily habits could help you move toward the next higher level?
-
How would your coaching practice feel different if your baseline was at Love (500) or above?
Key Takeaway
When you invest in your own consciousness, you amplify your positive influence exponentially. In Hawkins’ words, “We change the world not by what we say or do, but as a consequence of what we have become.”
